Bujumbura- Burundi (PANA) -- At least five students of the Bubanza Secondary Technical School, northwest of the country, sustained injuries Wednesday in clashes with the police, during a 40-km protest march which they intended will take them to the Ministry of National Education here.
Some 850 students of the institution had covered about 10-km on foot before they were stopped some 30-km from Bujumbura by about a hundred policemen who used their weapons to prevent the demonstrators from invading the capital.
It was not certain how the five students were injured in the ensuing pandemonium but sources said they might have been hit by bullets fired by the police to cont ain the situation.
A policeman was reportedly injured on the mouth, losing four teeth, as a stone w as thrown at him, PANA sources said.
The situation was still tense between the police and the rampaging students as a t the time of filing this report.
Discontent reportedly grew when the students were served "undigested" food at th e restaurant, after which they sought medical attention to prevent them from run n ing any health risk.
