FIFA Club World Cup: Al-Jariza begin campaign on successful note

Abu Dhabi, UAE (PANA) - UAE club, Al-Jazira, began their campaign for the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup on a good note, beating Auckland City of New Zealand 1-0 on Wednesday, the opening day of the 6-16 December contest.

The result also meant that the New Zealanders have been knocked out of the contest at that stage and the hosts have advanced to the quarter-finals.

Reports say that despite their dominance throughout the match, they lost 1-0 to the reigning UAE champions.

The New Zealanders have played at the Club World Cup nine times, but they have never been on top in a match like they were on Thursday at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain. They exit the 2017 tournament with a purse of US$500,000.

Al Jazira coach Henk ten Cate summed it up, talking about the team his side had somehow beaten.

"They were today the better side, but in football sometimes the best doesn't win."

The UAE team will meet Urawa Red of Japan in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

The prize monies are as follows:-

Winner US$5 million
Runner-up US$4 million
Third place US$2.5 million
Fourth place US$2 million
Fifth place US$1.5 million
Sixth place US$1 million
Seventh place US$0.5 million

Meanwhile, Wydad Casablanca, flying Africa's flag, take the field on Saturday, playing in the quarter-finals against Pachuca of Mexico.

The contest is featuring seven clubs -- Wydad Casablanca (Winners of the 2017 CAF Champions League); Gremio of Brazil, winners of the 2017 Copa Libertadores; Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan, winners of the 2017 Asian Champions League; Pachuca of Mexico, winners of the 2016–17 CONCACAF Champions League; Auckland City of New Zealand, winners of the 2017 OFC Champions League (now eliminated); Al-Jazira of the UAE, winners of the 2016–17 UAE Pro-League; and Real Madrid of Spain, defending champions and winners of the 2016–17 UEFA Champions League.

The Spanish team became the first defending champions to qualify for the subsequent tournament.

Real Madrid and Gremio will play from the semi-final stage.
