Female politician shot dead in Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - Gunmen on Sunday night shot dead Hajja Bayayi, a female Councillor representing the Bolori ward 1 in Nigeria's northern city of Maiduguri, the local media reported Monday

“Yes it happened last night during curfew hours. A woman politician was killed by unknown gunmen. We have commence investigation into the killing,” the Borno state police commissioner, Mr. Bala Hassan, was quoted as saying.

The Councillor was reportedly murdered in her residence in the Limanti area of the city.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, and the motive is yet unknown.

Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno state, is the stronghold of the violent Islamic sect Boko Haram, which has killed over 1,200 in gun and bomb attacks in the predominantly-Muslim north since 2009.
