Ex-health minister, 19 others in Mali court over AIDS fund embezzlement

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - Twenty persons, including former Minister of Health, Oumar Ibrahim Touré, Thursday appeared before the Court of Assizes in Bamako, Mali, facing charges of misappropriating funds earmarked for the fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, PANA reported.

When the scandal blew open in 2010, several billion of CFA francs, earmarked by the Global Fund to Fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, were seen to have been embezzled by officials from the Ministry of Health.

The trial is expected to last about a month, according to Idrissa Maiga, the Advocate General at the Malian Court of Appeal.
