Ethiopia braces for OAU/AU Golden Jubilee celebrations

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - African Union (AU) Chairperson and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn has launched a celebration of the continental organisation's Golden Jubilee, saying the event has a special significance for the people and government of Ethiopia.

As host to the seat of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the AU's predecessor, Hailemariam said Ethiopia has been preparing "to mark this historic event for well over two years now with great enthusiasm and devotion".

He said his government had organised a series of activities which would be carried out in the months leading to the anniversary in May 2013, with the participation of wide sections of the population.

"Through these activities we will promote a participatory process of reflection on the last 50 years of efforts towards African unity, with a view to defining the meaning we attach to Pan-Africanism  for the benefit of the coming generation in line with the decision of the AU Assembly," he explained.

The activities will culminate with the Special Summit of African Heads of State and Government here on 25 May 2013.
