Ethiopia: Africa to present common position at World Humanitarian Summit in Turkey

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The African Union (AU) will present a Common African Position (CAP) on Humanitarian Effectiveness at the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit, taking place 23 –24 May, 2016, in Istanbul, Turkey.

According to a report on its website, the AU said the Common African Position (CAP) will represent its vision on humanitarian issues in line with Agenda 2063.

It will represent the voices and concerns of Africa’s leaders and people in shaping a future humanitarian architecture, the report said.

The AU said that during the Istanbul Summit, it will host a High-Level Panel on humanitarian effectiveness in Africa, adding that the theme of the Panel, "Humanitarian Effectiveness in Africa", underscores the focus of AU’s humanitarian agenda in the next decade.

The continental body said the focus is in response to the call by Africa’s leaders and that of the UN Secretary-General for a future humanitarian system which is effective, relevant and fit for purpose.

The AU team to the summit will be led by Erastus Nwencha, the AU Deputy Chairperson.
