Ethiopia: AU says Al Shabaab attack against Ethiopian troops repulsed

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The African Union (AU) said on Thursday troops under the command of its Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) repulsed an attack by terror elements, capturing fighters and destroying weaponry during an attack on its base in Halgan, in the Hiran region of Somalia.

“We can confirm there was an attempted Al Shabaab attack on the AMISOM/Somali National Army (SNA) base in Halgan, Somalia. The enemy was successfully repulsed,” AMISOM said after the attack.

The casualty figures on both sides remained unclear with the AMISOM saying at least 110 Al Shabaab fighters, including a white foreign fighter, were killed during the camp raid.

AMISOM also added that an assortment of weapons was also captured when their troops repelled the attackers.

However, the Al Shabaab claimed to have killed 43 Ethiopian troops. But Ethiopian government officials have dismissed the claims, confirming the killing of 16 soldiers.

The militants were repulsed by AMISOM and the Somali National Army (SNA) troops on the ground and suffered heavy casualties.

The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, condemns in the strongest terms the failed attack, and praised the AMISOM troops for fighting to repulse the Al Shabaab attackers.

“Hundreds of Al Shabaab fighters were captured during the clashes. AMISOM and SNA forces also captured and destroyed a significant amount of the weapons used by the terrorist group,” the AU Chairperson said in a statement.

The AU said weapons including 10 Rocket Propelled Grenades, 101 AK47 assault weapons, anti-aircraft guns and communication equipment were captured during the attack.

“The Chairperson commends the fast response and gallantry exhibited by the Ethiopian contingent of AMISOM and the Somali forces,” the AU Commission’s top official said.

She said the attack further demonstrates the despicable nature of Al Shabaab, whose sole purpose is to spread terror and continue the destabilization of Somalia.

“Our resolve can only be rejuvenated, to fight on until Somalia is freed of all elements of terror.”
