Ethiopia: AU official says tense, unpredictable situation persists in Darfur

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The security situation in the restive region of Darfur in western Sudan remains "tense and unpredictable", a senior official of the African Union (AU) said here Thursday.

Acting Director for Peace and Security Admore Mupoki Kambudzi told the opening session of a quarterly meeting of UNAMID Troop and Police Contributing Countries (T/PCCs) at the AU headquarters, that there have been regular incidences of fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan Liberation Movement/Abdul Wahid faction in Jebbel Mara.

In addition, movements of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the areas affected by fighting to IDP camps have not abated.

"The increased uncertainties surrounding the lives of IDPs and their return to normal life remain a matter of deep concern for the international community, and for the AU in particular," said Kambudzi, expressing worry about reported communal conflicts as well as breach of law and order by locals.

"Criminal and banditry activities such as attacks, murder, robbery, shooting, theft and rape incidents remain major sources of insecurity in Darfur and UNAMID continues to encounter some incidents involving denial of access/restriction of movement imposed on humanitarian actors," he said.

The meeting was attended by heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the AU and their military attaches, UNAMID Force Commander, Lt Gen Frank Kamanzi, UNAMID Police Commissioner Mrs Priscilla Makotose,  and the officer in charge of UNAMID Joint Support and Coordination Mechanism (JSCM), Mr.  Abdourahman Ibrahim.

According to Kambudzi, the meeting participants updated each other on the military and police operations in Darfur.

He explained that the session was in line with the decision adopted by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) at its 605th meeting on 13 June 2016, requesting UNAMID to provide regular updates on the evolution of the situation in Darfur and the implementation of UNAMID mandate.
