Ethiopia: AU Commission urges Kenyans to respect the rule of law following Kenyatta polls win

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, reacting to the the official announcement of the final results of the presidential election in Kenya on 11 August, 2017, by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has called on all those wishing to challenge the results to do so through the channels provided for by the law.

According to the AU media channel, the General Elections on 8 August 2017 were deemed credible and transparent by all observer missions, including the one deployed by the AU.

The Chairperson is very concerned by the outbreak of violence in certain counties, leading to the loss of lives and the destruction of property. Recourse to violence is totally unacceptable, he warned.

He called on all concerned to refrain from any action or statement that can further heighten tensions, and stressed the need for the security agencies to respect fundamental human rights and refrain from the excessive use of force in their efforts to maintain law and order.
