Ethiopia: AU Chair reaffirms readiness to resolve post-election crisis in Gabon

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) -  The Chair of the African Union, Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno on Monday reaffirmed the readiness of the AU to assist the parties in Gabon in finding a rapid settlement to the post-election situation prevailing in the West-Central African country.

In a statement issued by the AU Commission, President Deby Itno said the AU would assist Gabon, with support of the countries of the region and partners concerned,  "in strict respect of the constitutional and legal provisions, as well as in the light of the relevant AU instruments on democracy and elections."

Gabon has faced a political crisis following the announcement on 31August 2016 of the provisional results of the presidential election held on 27 August, which opposition leader Jean Ping has declared himself the rightful winner.

The AU Chair has said that he maintains a constant liaison with the Gabonese main actors, as well as with other stakeholders concerned.

He stressed, in this regard, that a high-level delegation composed of African Heads of State, accompanied by senior officials of the AU Commission and the United Nations, is ready to be dispatched to Libreville, as soon as the conditions for such a visit are met, the statement added.
