Ethiopia, Algeria set to open direct air links

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - Ethiopian Airlines and Air Algerie are poised to start direct flights linking Addis Ababa and Algiers, as the governments of the two countries have affirmed their intention to bolster bilateral ties.

Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister Tedros Adhanom and his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra underlined the need for the two countries “to cooperate at all levels in key international issues as strategic partners,” said an official statement issued here Friday.

The statement followed discussion between the two ministers in the Ethiopian capital on ways to strengthen strategic partnership between Algeria and Ethiopia, following an agreement signed in June 2013 in Algiers.

Dr. Tedros said direct flights between the two countries and increased trade and investment should be key factors to bolster their bilateral ties.

According to the statement, Air Algerie and Ethiopian Airlines had already indicated their interest to open the routes and the two ministers have “agreed to offer all necessary support for a speedy start to such service.”

In addition, Dr. Tedros praised the interest of Cevital, Algeria’s biggest agro-processing company, to establish a sugar mill in Oromia Regional State of Ethiopia.

He said Ethiopia was planning to open its embassy in Algiers in June 2014 as part of its effort to strengthen bilateral ties.
