EU provides Cote d'Ivoire with humanitarian assistance

Brussels, Belgium (PANA) - The European Union (EU) is to provide additional humanitarian assistance, worth 30 million euros, for victims of the crisis in Cote d'Ivoire, a statement from the European Commission Services said.

The decision was made following a report of an experts mission dispatched on the field in Cote d'Ivoire.

Composed of experts in the fields of health, protection, water, sanitation and food, the mission primarily analyzed the situation in western Cote d’Ivoire and in Abidjan, the most affected areas by fighting, according to the statement.

The report said the priority was to quickly identify immediate humanitarian needs, while collaborating with authorities and partners in development assistance in order to enhance local institutional capacities for the transfer, in medium-term, of the management of basic services provision.

According to the report, thousands of people still lack access to the most basic products and services, including food, water and health care.

Funds granted by the EU will be managed by UN agencies operating in Cote d'Ivoire, humanitarian NGO partners of the EU and the Red Cross, the statement added.
