EU joins calls for national unity government in Côte d'Ivoire

Brussels, Belgium (PANA) – The European Union (EU) has added its voice to calls on the Ivorian president, Alassane Dramane Ouatara, to set up a broad-based all-inclusive government, which will representative of all regions and political trends.

In a statement to the press issued on Thursday in Brussels, the EU hailed the decision of president Ouattara to carry out the country's national reconciliation policy and rebuilding.

EU also urged him to "restore stability, peace and prosperity so that hurt lives can be rebuilt, families reunited and life should return to normal".

EU expressed its availability to back the truth and reconciliation committee announced by president Ouattara and to help in the country's rapid economic reconstruction.

The EU has already decided to release 180 million euro towards the rebuilding of the country, while waiting for the restoration of their full cooperation.

The UN Security Council on Thursday called on Ivorian President Ouattara to form an all-inclusive and broad-based government to ensure the unity and stability of the country.

"The members of the Security Council urge all Ivorians to abstain from any reprisals, revenge or provocation, to exercise maximum restraint and to work together to promote national reconciliation and restore sustainable peace through dialogue and consultation,” Ambassador Nestor Osorio of Colombia, which holds the Council’s rotating monthly presidency, said in a statement.
