EU hails return to constitutional rule in Mali

Brussels, Belgium (PANA) - The European Union (EU) has hailed the planned return to constitutional rule in Mali, following an agreement reached between the coupists who seized power in the country 22 March and the regional bloc ECOWAS.

In a statement issued here Wednesday, the EU expressed full support to the 15-member body in its efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis in the West African nation.

It commended the organization for sending a ''clear message" to rebels in Northern Mali, who have declared independence for the 'State of Azawad', that independence is not an option.

The EU statement was issued after ECOWAS Chairman and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara informed it of the pact that will see the coup leader, Capt. Amadou Sanogo, hand over to the Speaker of the National Assembly, and the appointment of a Prime Minister to organize fresh elections.
