EU finances demining operation in Congo

Brazzaville- Congo (PANA) -- The Congolese government and the European Union (EU) on Wednesday signed a funding agreement to the tune of 750,000 Euros to conduct a demining operation at the minefield near the Maya-Maya international airport, i n the Congolese capital, Brazzaville.
Signed by the Congolese Minister of Economy and Planning, Pierre Moussa, and the EU Ambassador in Congo, Marcel Van Opstal, the agreement will afford authoritie s in the African country to make the minefield safe under the 10th European Devel o pment Fund (EDF).
Following the agreement, experts will clear the area of explosive materials and train Congolese military on how to detect and remove such materials.
It will also entail a through public awareness campaign on the dangers of explos ive devices.
