EU Ministers discuss African conflicts

Brussels- Belgium (PANA) -- The two-day EU Council of Foreign Ministers meeting ended in Brussels Tuesday, restating the Union's support for the Lusaka peace accord to end the war in the DR Congo.
A communique said the Ministers, who discussed African conflicts, called on all parties to the Congo conflict to respect the UN Security Council resolutions and co-operate with the UN Mission in the Congo (MONUC).
The Ministers praised the plan by the UN Secretary General to launch the third phase of MONUC deployment, and the forthcoming visit of a UN Security Council delegation to the Congo.
The Ministers stressed the need to disarm, demobilise and reintegrate the armed groups now operating in Congo.
They also called on Rwanda to honour its commitment to repatriate and reintegrate all its forces operating on the Congolese territory, with priority to child soldiers.
The Council expressed satisfaction over the 3-4 May meeting involving parties to the Congolese conflict ahead of the forthcoming inter-Congolese dialogue.
The Foreign Ministers also welcomed Congo's vote to abolish the death sentence at the recent UN Human Rights Committee session in Geneva.
They called on the Congolese government to include the resolution in the national legislation.
In addition, they also called on all parties to guarantee the security of humanitarian workers providing assistance to victims of the conflict.
The Council noted the report of the UN Commission on the plundering of Congolese wealth and expressed support for the extension of the Commission's mandate.
The Ministers also discussed the Mano River Union Basin, grouping Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, and expressed concern over the "deteriorating political and humanitarian situation" They reaffirmed EU's support for UN sanctions against Liberia and endorsed the extension of the EU Conciliation Mission to Togo until 30 November 2001.
Following the Mission, the Togolese government is to organise early parliamentary elections in October, the communique added.
