ECOWAS to elect new leadership at Dakar Summit

Lagos- Nigeria (PANA) -- Election of a new ECOWAS Chairman and Executive Secretary will highlight the 25th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the sub-regional economic grouping, scheduled for 20-21 December in Dakar, Senegal.
A Summit agenda released by the ECOWAS Secretariat in Abuja, said the new Chairman will replace President Alpha Konare of Mali, who was elected for a second consecutive term (of one year), during the 2000 Summit in Bamako, while the new Executive Secretary will take over from Lansana Kouyate, of Guinea, whose tenure expires December 2001 Other issues to be considered by the regional leaders include the evaluation of progress in the integration programmes being pursued by the 15-member Organisation and the designation of host countries for the ECOWAS Parliament and Court of Justice.
The Parliament and the Court, which were inaugurated in November 2000 and January 2001 respectively, in Bamako, have been operating from the ECOWAS Secretariat in Abuja.
The Dakar Summit, which is also expected to consider a memorandum on the selection of the lyrics of the ECOWAS anthem and flag, will be preceded by the 48th session of the Council of Ministers, the body responsible for the administration of the Organisation.
The Council meeting, scheduled for 15-17 December also in Dakar, will consider among others, reports from the Board of Directors of the ECOWAS Fund, the ad-hoc ministerial Committee on the restructuring of the Fund, the governors of Central Banks, and the convergence Council.
