Lagos- Nigeria (PANA) -- ECOWAS has hailed last week's successful elections in its member State, Sierra Leone, which returned incumbent President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah to power.
"The ECOWAS Secretariat wishes to congratulate the Government of Sierra Leone for the peaceful and successful conduct of the Parliamentary and Presidential elections held in that country on 14th May 2002," the 15-nation Abuja-based Organisation said in a statement.
"ECOWAS commends also the people of Sierra Leone for the maturity shown throughout the electoral process," it added.
The Community, which sent a 30-member delegation to monitor the elections, expressed the hope that the polls would be a "giant step by the people of Sierra Leone to put behind them the sad and painful experience of the 10-year civil war that ravaged their country.
" It urged them to "keep up their spirit and ensure that the process is consolidated, even while the restructuring of the country continues.
