ECOWAS mediator for Mali in Mali since Thursday

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Mediator of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) for Mali, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, has been in Mali since Thursday, a good source told PANA.

Jonathan will meet with the Malian authorities of the transition, representatives of political parties and civil society to find a way out of the crisis that Mali has been going through for years.

Although no information is available on this visit for the moment, according to diplomatic sources, it will last 48 hours, during which Jonathan will hold talks with the Malian transitional authorities as a prelude to the ECOWAS summit scheduled for 3 July, 2022, in Accra, Ghana.

The summit will discuss the situation in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso, three countries ruled by the military following coups. Mali is still under sanctions imposed by ECOWAS since 9 January.

These sanctions concern the closure of the land and air borders of the member countries of the sub-regional organization with Mali, the suspension of economic and financial transactions with Mali and the freezing of the country's assets at the BCEAO.
