ECOWAS hails peaceful resolution of Ghana's election petition

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) - The ECOWAS Commission has commended the Government, the Judiciary and people of Ghana for the ''peaceful and transparent resolution'' of the electoral petition filed by the opposition New Patriotic Party before the country's Supreme Court, following the 7 Dec. 2012 presidential poll.

In a statement made available to PANA here Friday, the Commission said it was particularly encouraged by the ''acts of exemplary statesmanship'' demonstrated by the leaderships of both the governing and main opposition parties before and after the ruling of the court on 29 Aug. 2013, which upheld the results of the election, as well as the peaceful conduct of the Ghanaian polity and population throughout the proceedings.

''By the transparent and peaceful manner of the judicial process, Ghana has once more demonstrated her credentials as a beacon of peace, democracy and the rule of law in Africa,''  ECOWAS said.

PANA quoted the 15-member regional bloc as saying the experiences from Ghana's electoral process, including the post-election petition and the way it was handled, would contribute to the further enhancement of electoral management and democratic culture in the country and the ECOWAS region as a whole.
