ECOWAS congratulates Guinea for successful polls

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) - The ECOWAS Commission on Sunday congratulated Guinea for the 28 Sept legislative polls, following the release of the provisional results.

''The conclusion of these elections marks the conclusion of the transitional process facilitated by ECOWAS and the rest of the international community.

''The Commission congratulates the President, the Government, and people of Guinea for the political will and determination to restore full constitutional order in the country. It also commends the other stakeholders, in particular, the National Transitional Council, the political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission, Civil Society and the media for their commitment to the promotion of democratic culture in the country, '' the Commission said in a statement made available to PANA here.

It said the holding of the legislative elections paves the way for the Guinean government and the people to turn their attention to the ''urgent task of national reconciliation and reconstruction''.

In this regard, the Commission said, the newly elected National Assembly would serve as a legitimate platform to all the political stakeholders for deliberations on all matters regarding the country’s future.

According to the provisional results announced on Friday, the electoral commission said the ruling RPG party won 53 of the 114 seats in parliament, the leading opposition Union for the Democratic Forces of Guinea party won 37 seats and the smaller opposition won the rest.

The ruling and opposition parties have traded accusations over vote tampering.
