ECOWAS body condemns the use of force in Liberia

Yamoussoukro- Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) -- The Economic Community of West African States' (ECOWAS) mediation and security council has resolved to condemn "all forms of taking over power by force" in Liberia.
Ten members of the council unanimously adopted a resolution to this effect by also recommending the sending of observers to evaluate the military situation in Liberia, which is facing rebels of the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy.
The resolution further urged the belligerents to initiate a "negotiations procedure" prior to the designation of a mediator to assist in settling their differences.
ECOWAS leaders will, among other issues, consider this resolution during a meeting which opened here Friday.
