ECOWAS Defence Chiefs Meet Monday

Abuja- Nigeria (PANA) -- Defence Chiefs of ECOWAS Member States will meet in Abidjan Monday to agree on the modalities for the implementation of the decisions of the just-ended Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State in Dakar on the deployment of a peacekeeping force in Cote d'Ivoire, an official source said.
During the 18 December Summit, the regional leaders set 31 December as the deadline for the deployment of the troops, which are being contributed by Benin, Ghana, Niger, Senegal and Togo.
The meeting of the Defence and Security Commission will agree on the modalities for the deployment of the force and consider the report of the 18-member advance team, which has been in Cote d'Ivoire since 17 November.
The defence chiefs will also be briefed on the appointment of Gen.
Papa Khalil Fall of Senegal as the Force Commander and Ambassador Raph Uwechue of Nigeria as the Special Representative of the ECOWAS Executive Secretary for Cote d'Ivoire.
Both appointments were announced during the just-concluded Summit, which also directed the Mediation and Security Council to ensure the effective implementation of the decisions relating to the Force.
