ECOWAS: ECOWAS condemns Boko Haram attack in Chad

Abuja, Nigeria (PANA) - ECOWAS has condemned the recent Boko Haram attack in Chad that left over 20 people dead, calling it appalling, barbaric and despicable.

In a statement made available to PANA here Wednesday, the 15-member regional bloc said it learnt of the attack, which also left many injured and buildings damaged, ''with grave concern''.

ECOWAS extended solidarity and heartfelt sympathy to the government and people of the Republic of Chad and the bereaved families.

It reiterated its commitment to work with the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) member states in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and all stakeholders ''to halt these horrendous terrorist attacks that continue to pose great threats to the peace, security and stability of the region and the continent''.

PANA reports that the MNJTF, which will comprise troops from LCBC member states, is expected to deploy 30 July as a regional force to tackle Boko Haram, which started in Nigeria and has now expanded its violent attacks to the neighbouring countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger - all LCBC members.

The force is headquartered in N'Djamena, Chad.
