ECOWAS, UNHCR sign Memorandum

Lagos- Nigeria (PANA) -- West African sub-regional group ECOWAS and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a framework for a multi-sectoral co-operation between them.
The ECOWAS Secretariat said in a statement in Abuja Friday the agreement would also facilitate co-operation between the UNHCR and the governments of ECOWAS member States.
The agreement covers issues on refugees and asylum seekers, particularly refugee women and unaccompanied minors, forced population movement into and within the sub-region, asylum and refugee protection principles as well as humanitarian and human rights law.
It will also involve the establishment and development of mechanisms for managing and addressing the root causes of refugee situations and security concerns in refugee-dwelling places.
Other areas include funding for internally-displaced persons, refugees and returnees, and their training.
The 15-member economic group recently signed similar co-operation agreements with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
