ECCAS validates provisions of action plan in fight against AIDS

Brazzaville, Congo (PANA) - Ministers from member countries of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) have validated certain parts of the larger plan of action in their fight against HIV/AIDS, according to an official statement here.

It said that the ministers validated three of the five plan of action during their roundtable in Brazzaville, the Congolese capital.

The statement said the ministers discussed shared responsibilities and regional solidarity in the fight against the scourge in the sub-region.

On the first provision -- the fight against HIV/AIDS in Central Africa -- the ministers agreed on how to fight against transmission from mother to child.

They said "Indeed, the most recent estimates show that the Central African sub-region has the lowest level of medical care for the pandemic, with a rate of 3.7 per cent."

The ministers, however, made some commitments to reduce the rate of transmission from mother to child and enhance the capacity to manage pediatric AIDS.

The second plan validated by the ministers concerns the availability and accessibility of antiretroviral drugs, coupled with the harmonization of pharmaceutical policies and treatment regimes for HIV.

The third plan focuses on coordination and governance projects as well as international partnership. This plan aims at establishing a common policy based on surveillance, monitoring and evaluation of activities against the pandemic.

They agreed that the other two provisions in the plan would be included in their second phase of the strategic plan.

They recommended the strengthening of capacities of national institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights for all people living with HIV.

In addition, a draft budget of US$ 13 million for the ECCAS strategic plan for the 2014-2018 was passed.

ECCAS comprises 10 countries -- Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe and Chad.
