Deputy chairman of Libyan Council invited to Global Humanitarian Conference on Sudan in Paris

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The deputy chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Moussa al-Kouni, Monday received an official invitation to attend the World Humanitarian Conference on Sudan, to be held in the French capital, Paris, in mid-April.

Mr. al-Kouni received the invitation when he met the French Ambassador to Libya, Mustafa Mihraje, on Monday.

During the meeting in Tripoli, the French ambassador expressed his gratitude to Mr. Al-Kouni for the Presidential Council's participation in this important global event, which will bring together the relevant regional and international players.

He explained that the aim of the conference is to coordinate the various international and regional initiatives seeking to resolve the crisis that has shaken Sudan since the outbreak of armed clashes between the Sudanese parties, according to a statement from the Presidential Council.

The deputy chairman of the Libyan Council explained, according to the same source, that what happens in Sudan or in one of its neighbouring countries directly affects the security and stability of Libya, and that it is necessary to pay attention to this issue.

Mr. Al-Kouni spoke of the recent reception of the two parties to the conflict in a neutral manner, in order to find urgent and effective solutions to the crisis.

At the end of February, the Libyan Prime Minister led a mediation aimed at reconciling the points of view of the two main protagonists in the conflict in Sudan to achieve a ceasefire and peace in this Arab and African country.

This followed the successive arrivals in Tripoli of the President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, and the Commander of the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias Hemedti.

During his meeting with the French diplomat, Mr. al-Kouni spoke of the humanitarian situation resulting from the crisis and the repercussions of the armed clashes on the inhabitants of the areas who have been forced to flee to neighbouring countries, particularly Libya, where the border areas are experiencing an influx of large numbers of Sudanese citizens.

He stressed that certain internal and closed areas of Sudan, such as Darfur, have a fundamental need to use the border crossing with Libya, which is one of the most important entry points for delivering humanitarian aid to the people of the region.

Since April, 2023, the Sudanese people have been caught up in a deadly armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) led by Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commanded by Lieutenant-General Hemedti.

According to the latest United Nations figures, the war has claimed more than 13,000 lives and displaced around 8 million people and refugees.
