Cote d'Ivoire crisis: Gbagbo’s security forces in new offensive in Abobo

Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) - Defence and security forces close to outgoing Cote d'Ivoire President Laurent Gbagbo Saturday embarked on a military offensive in Abobo district (north of Abidjan), with a view to "liberating" this neighbourhood, which has been transformed into a battlefield in the past few days, PANA learnt from authoritative sources here.

"There had been firing in Abobo for several hours and it continued until early in the evening," an inhabitant of an area near Abobo, from where he could hear the firing of heavy weapons, confirmed to PANA on telephone.

It is Gbagbo's defence and security forces wanting to "rid Abobo of terrorists."

For several weeks, Abobo has become the stage of bloody and lethal clashes between defence security forces and armed civilians close to Alassane Ouattara, Gbagbo's rival.
