Coronavrus: African Vaccines Trust to launch compensation scheme

Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire (PANA) - The African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT) will launch a No-Fault Compensation Scheme (NFCS) for COVID-19 vaccines in participating African and Caribbean countries on Tuesday in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, organisers announced.

The AVAT NFCS offers eligible individuals prompt, fair and transparent compensation for unexpected adverse events associated with COVID-19 vaccines acquired or distributed under the AVAT initiative, it said.

AVAT acts as a centralised procurement agent on behalf of African Union  (AU) member states to obtain the vaccines and blended financial resources needed to implement the African COVID-19 vaccination strategy.

The statement said the AVAT secured several hundred million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, which were rolled out in the third quarter of 2021.

The AVAT was established by the African Union Task Force for the Procurement of COVID-19 Vaccines as a support component to the COVID-19 immunisation strategy and was approved by the AU Bureau of Heads of State and Government in August 2020.

AVAT's institutional partners are the African Union, the African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa), the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
