Coronavirus: Ghana police arrest many people for flouting safety Protocols

Accra, Ghana (PANA) - The police in Ghana have within the past 24 hours arrested hundreds of people across the country for flouting he health protocol measures instituted to fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.  

The action follows directives to the security services from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his 22nd nationwide broadcast to the nation to stem an upsurge in the pandemic.

The arrests were carried out in Accra, Abura and Kotokoraba, suburbs of Cape Coast Metropolis and Kasoa in the Central Region for breaching the protocols, especially for refusing to wear the nose masks.

The police command Thursday arrested more than 85 persons for breaching the COVID-19 safety protocols in the Cape Coast Metropolis while more than 100 others were arrested in Kasoa, near Accra.

The majority of those arrested were largely pedestrians, drivers, shop attendants, foreigners, and travellers from all walks of life.

The police action made people rush for the nose masks that were readily available in the streets and markets.

Some arrested persons told the state-run Ghana News Agency they were aware of the need to wear the nose masks but complained of heat after several hours o wearing the masks.

Briefing the media after the exercise, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Irene Serwaah Oppong, Regional Public Relations Officer, warned that offenders would be taken and later dealt with in accordance with the law to compel the general public to strictly adhere to the COVID-19 protocols.

Meanwhile, he police are continuing with the exercise to ensure maximum compliance with the president’s order.
