Bujumbura- Burundi (PANA) -- The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) is to cl ose down the Gihinga camp for Congolese refugees in central Burundi on 30 Septem b er and transfer them to Bwagiriza in the east of the country.
The decision to transfer the Congolese refugees to Bwagiriza is to provide them with more assistance and protection, and for operational and budgetary reasons, a statement from the UNHCR said on Saturday.
The new Bwagiriza camp already provides shelter for some 700 Congolese refugees who spontaneously accepted to be transferred, but 2,300 others are still hesitat i ng to move from Gihinga.
UNHCR provides protection and assistance for some 29,000 refugees in Burundi, ma jority of whom are of Congolese origin, in four camps and in urban areas.
