Abidjan- Cote d'Ivoire (PANA) -- France has decorated the chairman of Cote d'Ivoire's National Electoral Commission, Honore Guie, with the medal of Chevalier in the French National Order of Merit, diplomatic sources revealed Wednesday in Abidjan.
The sources said the French Ambassador to Cote d'Ivoire, Renaud Vignal performed the ceremony in Abidjan in recognition of Guie's efforts "to ensure the holding of free and transparent elections and the strengthening of the rule of law in Cote d'Ivoire".
Vignal pointed out that France decorated Guie for "the very important role he played in the development of democracy in Cote d'Ivoire during the presidential elections, which won him the admiration of everyone, particularly France".
Guie chaired the commission that supervised the constitutional referendum on the controversial nationality clause before being appointed to head the electoral commission.
The October 2000 presidential elections plus the parliamentary and local elections that followed respectively in December 2000 and March 2001 were held under his supervision.
