Chad wants Africa to rule its destiny against terrorism

Diamniadio, Senegal (PANA) - Chadian Prime Minister Albert Pahimi Padacké has urged African countries to get strongly engaged in the fight against terroism.

Speaking Tuesday at the 4th Dakar international forum on peace and security in Africa, he said that the continent must first rely on itself before seeking help from others.

"No government can on its own eradicate terrorism. We must take action together because our states are inter-dependent and terrorism is a global phenomenon," said Mr Padacké.

"The continent's fight against terrorism concerns all Aricans", Mr Padacké told the 400 delegates taking part in the forum held in Diamniadio, about 40 kilometres east of Dakar.

Speaking on behalf of Chadian President Idriss Déby Itno, he underlined the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism, urging African countries to go "beyond speeches"  and to invest more means.

"All countries enarmoured with peace must unite against the phenomenon", he said, adding that the fight against violence in general passed also through "stronger social justice, the respect of democratic rule, the establishment of rule of law everyday by populations, the eradication of poverty and a profitable economic growth for all.

The opening ceremony of the forum was held in the presence of Senegalese President Macky Sall, President Ibrahima Boubacar Keïta of Mali, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat and the French minister of Armed Forces, Mrs Florence Parly.

The two-day forum is held under the auspices of the Senegalese ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Senegalese living abroad, with the support of the French Ministry of Defence and several other partners.

It has brought together more than 400 participants including regional and international actors, public and military authorities, experts, university professors, diplomats, representatives of international organisations and civil society activists.
