Central African Republic: MINUSCA condemns attack on Rwandan police unit in Bangui

Bangui, CAR (PANA) – The UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has strongly condemned an ambush on the Rwandan police unit early Thursday.

In a communique it issued following the incident, MINUSCA accused "unidentified criminals" saying that the attack occurred as the Rwandan police unit was on patrol in Gabongo district  of the capital Bangui and it caused "huge material damage."

Earlier in the day gunshots were heard in the first district close to the army barracks in Bangui and in the 8th district where a police unit from DR Congo has set up a guard station.

According to the communique, several vehicles of the international community, including MINUSCA, were targets of violent attacks which also threatened lives of workers on board the vehicles.

MINUSCA has opened investigation into circumstances surrounding the attacks, vowing to take their perpetrators to court. It warned that such criminal acts which fuel violence will not be tolerated as they cause panic among the population and compromise efforts for peace and stability.
