Burundi in process of ratifying African Youth Charter

Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) - The adoption by the Council of Ministers of a draft law ratifying the African Youth Charter is the most important socio-political event of the week that is drawing to a close in Burundi.

The bill was presented by the Minister of East African Community Affairs, Youth, Sports and Culture, Ezéchiel Nibigira.

The stated interest in adhering to this legal instrument is that the African continent has more than 400 million young people, aged between 15 and 35, the youngest population in the world.

In Burundi, more than 65 per cent of the 12.8 million inhabitants fall into the category of young people under the age of 25.

The African Youth Charter is seen as a means of empowerment and accountability of young people in the States Parties. So far, 39 of the 55 member states have already ratified the Charter and 43 have already signed it.

In Burundi, the actual ratification of the African Youth Charter is only pending the endorsement of the Parliament, upon referral from the executive.
