Burkina Faso aims to reduce FGM prevalence rate by 20% in 2020

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - As a result of concerted action by the government of Burkina Faso, in collaboration with technical and financial partners, the prevalence of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the country has markedly dropped, the ministry responsible for Family and Women's Affairs said on Monday

The West African nation aims at a 20 percent reduction of the FGM prevalence by 2020 as its efforts seek to suppress and prevent  the practice.

In a statement issued on the eve of the 15th  International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, the ministry said that the eradication of FGM requires a synergy of actions from all the components of the society.

This year's observation of the Day by the international community, is held under the theme:  ‘Ending female genital mutilation is a political decision’.

"This theme appeals for the role and engagement of political decision-makers, as well as the regional and sub-regional institutions in the promotion of the eradication of the female genital mutilation said the statement.

FGM is internationally recognized as a human rights violation and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), jointly with UNICEF, leads the largest global programme to accelerate the abandonment of FGM.

In 2012, the UN General Assembly designated 6 February as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation in order to enhance awareness of the issue and to encourage concrete actions against the practice.

According to Burkina Faso's Demographic and Health Survey, the FGM rate dropped from 75.80% of women aged between 15-45 years and 13.3% for the age bracket 0-14 years in 2010 to 67.6% and 11.3% respectively in 2015.

"Our actions must focus not only on the suppression of actors and follow-up of the victims, but also on prevention to eradicate the causes of the phenomenon which, particularly, draws its source from negative social norms," the ministry emphasized.
