Burkina Faso: Ousted president Kafando back in power

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - Burkina Faso’s interim president, Michel Kafando, ousted in a coup d'etat on 17 Sept. 2015, is back in the saddle, preparing grounds for the country’s democratic transition.

Reports indicated that Kafando himself announced his return to power during a press conference here Wednesday.

“The transition government is back and we are exercising the power of the state,” Kafando said.

PANA reports that Kafando's return was made possible by West African leaders who successfully brokered a deal late Tuesday with the elite presidential guards that seized power.

Kafando expressed pride in his people, "whose bravery halted the coup launched last week by the presidential guards".

"We are proud of the mobilisation and fearlessness of the people of Burkina Faso, in particular of the youth, whose determination has stopped the insurrection," he said in a statement.

"I salute the international community for having rejected unequivocally this action," he said.

The coup led to at least one dozen deaths.

The five-point agreement that was announced on Wednesday, was signed before the head of the Mossi ethnic group, Mogho Naaba, a major traditional leader.

The West African leaders had condemned the seizure of power by the presidential guards, led by Brig.-Gen. Gilbert Diendere, and called for the reinstatement of the transitional institutions and Mr Kafando as transition president.

The presidential guards, loyal to ousted President Blaise Compaore, who lives in exile in Cote d'Ivoire, have agreed to return to their barracks under the agreement.

They said they staged the coup because supporters of Compaore were disqualified from standing for elections.

It is not yet clear what will happen to the coup plotters as civil society and the general public are against the declaration of amnesty to them.

Burkina Faso is due hold elections on 11 Oct. to end the transition process.

However, it is not yet known if the elections will still hold as scheduled.
