Burkina Faso: 'Security around Nkwamé Nkrumah Avenue in Ouagadougou reinforced'

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) – New security measures have been tightened around Nkwamé Nkrumah Avenue in Ouagadougou, the Burkina Faso capital, where two terrorist attacks claimed about 50 lives since 2016, Security minister, Simon Compaoré, announced on Monday.

The minister, who spoke during a meeting with the residents of the lively Avenue, reassured that Instead of fleeing the area, people should rather strive to live there because it is a better place to live".

"These are not on-off measures, these are long-lasting ons and you can notice it by night and by day," he said, without giving further details about the scheme.

In mid-january 2016, terrorists attacked a hostel and a café frequented by Europeans on Nkwamé Nkrumah Avenue, killing about 30 people.

"If the responsibility of this attack was claimed by AQMI shortly after, the one claiming 19 deaths on 13 August, some 200 meters from the first one near the same Avenue is yet to be claimed.
