Botswana hosts 7th IWG World Conference on Women in Sport

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - The 7th International Working Group (IWG) World Conference on Women in Sport opened in Gaborone, Botswana, on Thursday.

Taking place from 17 to 20 May 2018, the conference, holding under the theme “Determine The future. Be Part Of The Change”, is featuring six plenary sessions and side events that will cover various issues under several topical sub themes.

UNESCO which is participating in the opening plenary, is also co-hosting a side event on gender equality and female empowerment in sport policy with the Commonwealth Secretariat, UN Women and the International Working Group (IWG) on Women in Sport International.

The Conference is organized by the International Working Group (IWG) on Women in Sport with the support of all organizations working on female empowerment through and participation in sport (UN Women, Women Sport International, International Olympic Committee, etc).

According to UNESCO, the expected outcome from the conference is to generate support for the Kazan Action Plan.

The Kazan Action Plan was adopted on 15 July 2017 by UNESCO’s Sixth International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport, MINEPS VI.

The text is the result of extensive consultations with UNESCO’s Member States, the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) and its Permanent Consultative Council, as well as other experts and practitioners in the field of physical duration, physical activity and sport policy.

It marks the commitment to link sport policy development to the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations, as well as support to an overarching sport policy follow-up framework and five priority areas for international and national multi-stakeholder cooperation.
