Botswana: Trump congratulates Botswana on 51st independence day

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - US President Donald Trump on Thursday sent a message to Botswana’s President Ian Khama congratulating the country on its 51st birthday which falls on 30 September.

He also commended the southern African country's commitment to democracy, peace and prosperity.

“I am grateful for Botswana’s strong and principled stand on international issues, including your condemnation of North Korean aggression and human rights abuses around the world,” President Trump said.

Botswana is one the countries to terminate diplomatic ties with North Korea.

The decision taken in 2014 was informed by a report released by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea which details systematic, widespread and grave human rights violations by North Korean authorities.

Botswana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation is on record for condemning developments in North Korea.
