Botswana: HPV vaccination on young girls to begin

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - Botswana’s ministry of health intends to administer Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination to girls aged between 9 and 13 years, next week.

According to the health ministry here, HPV is the leading cause of cancer mortality among women in Botswana and is known to cause almost all cases of cervical cancer.

Dr. Kolaatamo Malefho, permanent secretary in the ministry, on Wednesday urged the nation to give the support necessary to ensure that all eligible girls receive the vaccination.

“The HPV virus which causes cervical cancer will start on the 23rd to 27th February 2015,” said Malefho.

Malefho said the HPV vaccine can prevent infection from HPV types which are responsible for 70% of cervical cancer worldwide and also protects against types that cause anal and genital warts.
