Botswana: Botswana to pilot live parliamentary broadcast

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - The Speaker of Botswana's National Assembly, Gladys Kokorwe, has announced that the country’s parliamentary discussions will soon be broadcast live.

Kokorwe on Tuesday said the piloting and scoping, ahead of implementation, is to allow adequate planning that includes regulatory framework and resource adequacy.

She said parliament had been allocated 3.7 million Botswanan pula for scoping and piloting of the project, although there were some delays emanating from consultations with other key stakeholders. (US$1=10.3 pula)

“We have to collaborate with other stakeholders in place to see how we can fit within the existing systems,” said Kokorwe, referring to the national broadcaster and the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA).

The development comes after parliament passed a motion on broadcasting live parliamentary proceedings, following a public demand for reinstatement of Parliament News on the state broadcaster’s channels.
