Botswana: Botswana to introduce single biometric identification system

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - Botswana intends to upgrade the country’s biometric platform to accommodate all identification requirements of various government departments.

Morpho South Africa, a subsidiary of Safran Identity & Security, in a statement received in Gaborone on Friday, confirmed signing a contract with Botswana Police Service (BPS) for an upgrade and rationalisation of an Automated Fingerprint Identification System(AFIS) platforms into a single, multi-biometric and multi-use new-generation platform.

Paul Jeremias, Managing Director of Morpho South Africa, said the upgrade is a total integration of multiple biometric technologies in a single platform.

“Not only is it more cost-effective but also it is a vital facilitator of increasing national security and enabling e-Government services," Jeremias said.

However, BPS’s spokesperson, Assistant Police Commissioner Witness Boseja, told reporters that acquiring the new system is a national security issue, preferring to remain cagey on the details.

“Yes, it’s common for such equipment to be used by the police.

"I cannot at this point disclose which company we have a contract with, at what cost and how we are going to benefit from the system because disclosing such information to the public can be risky to national security,” Boseja said.

According to Safran, BPS has regularly chosen the company's products or solutions to meet its requirements since 1998.

The new multi-biometric system will use both fingerprint and facial recognition and will serve all the identification requirements of various government departments.

In addition, it is the first step for the rationalisation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) systems for the government.

“This will be one of the most advanced and complex systems ever delivered in terms of integration with multiple systems and the segregation and security of the data of each department,” Jeremias said.

Morpho South Africa will also deliver numerous liveScan and cardScan stations as well as mobile handheld devices and will be in charge of the maintenance of the system for three years.

Safran is a leading international high-technology group with three core businesses - aerospace, defence and security.
