Botswana: Botswana's support to Sexwale for FIFA post questionable

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - Botswana’s football association has indirectly admitted intentions to support South African Tokyo Sexwale for FIFA presidency, local media reported Wednesday.

Botswana Football Association (BFA) is sitting on the fence with regard to backing Sexwale, local daily Mmegi reported Wednesday.

Sexwale is among five candidates contesting for the top post at the world football governing body. BFA, however, could not confirm their preferred candidate, leaving the issue suspended.

“The BFA executive committee took a common position on the FIFA presidential candidate. However, I am not at liberty to disclose the preferred candidate,” said BFA Chief Executive Officer Kitso Kemoeng.

BFA President has offered an opposing view on the issue suggesting that the Association has already taken a decision.

“We are proceeding gingerly on the issue. As the executive, we are inclined towards South Africa, but as you know the government is a critical stakeholder, so we want to hear what they say,” said BFA president Tebogo Sebego.

In December Sexwale made a presentation to COSAFA members seeking their backing for the post.
