Botswana: Botswana ordered to free detained refugees

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - The Botswana Court of Appeal President, Justice Ian Kirby, has lashed out at the Government for detaining hundreds of asylum seekers at Francistown Centre for Illegal Immigrants.

Kirby on Monday ordered the State to release all asylum seekers and accommodate them at Dukwi refugee camp.

The Asylum seekers had sought the court's intervention to be recognised as refugees and not criminals entering Botswana.

More than 250 refugees have been awaiting relocation to Dukwi.

The asylum seekers' lawyer, Morgan Moseki, said the asylum seekers had been unlawfully detained at the Francistown Centre since 2015.

The petitioners come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Somalia, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

Most of the asylum seekers fled to Botswana because of the volatile political climate in their respective countries.
