Botswana: 600 DRC refugees sent packing from Botswana

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - Botswana has sent 600 Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) nationals home, after denying them refugee status, local media reported here on Monday.

Augustine Makgonatsotlhe, the permanent secretary in the ministry of Defence, Justice and Security, who doubles as the chairperson for the Refugee Advisory Committee, told media that all procedures have been followed.

“However, the reasons advanced were not all that convincing,” said Makgonatsotlhe.

Botswana has been experiencing an influx of Congolese refugee seekers over the past months.

The Congolese asylum seekers have started flocking to Botswana on fleeing neighbouring countries – South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Botswana has already notified the Congolese government of its decision to repatriate the refugees.
