Body of Kofi Annan flown back home for state funeral

Accra, Ghana (PANA) - The remains of former Secretary-General of the UN, Kofi Annan, arrived back home in Ghana on Monday evening, accompanied by his wife, Nane, children and grandchildren for a state funeral on Thursday.

The casket, draped in UN colours, was carried off the plane by six soldiers. Libation was poured by a traditional elder and Christian prayers were also said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led a high-powered delegation including Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, senior government officials, military and diplomats to receive the body at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Annan died in Switzerland on 18 August 2018.

The UN flag was later removed and the casket draped in the Ghanaian colours.

The body was driven to the Accra International Conference Centre where it it will lie in state for two days. On Tuesday members of the public will pay their last respects while dignitaries from Ghana and across the globe will take their turn on Wednesday.

The funeral service will be on Thursday before private burial at the Military Cemetery in Accra.
