Benin to rehabilitate Cotonou-Niamey highway corridor

Cotonou, Benin (PANA) - Benin authorities will soon rehabilitate the Beroubouay-Malanville section of the Cotonou-Niamey Corridor, a road linking the Beninese and Nigerien capitals, the Benin Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport said on Tuesday.

The rehabilitation of "this very important" axis for commercial purposes between Benin and Niger will be achieved, thanks to two loans - OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), amounting to 13.2 billion FCFA and another of 65 billion FCFA obtained from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).

The rehabilitation project for the 169.4-km-long corridor includes the civil engineering work on the "Béroubouay- Goubafari river" (148.6 km) and "Goubafari river-Malanville" lots (20.8 km).

It will involve earthworks and pavements, the coating, the drainage, the maintenance and the construction of works of art, signaling and lighting, and road safety equipment.

Due to its socio-economic dimension, the project also includes related works, including the development of 65 km of dirt tracks, the construction of 15 classrooms, two health centers, eight markets, 10 boreholes, five water reservoirs, 52 latrines, and the construction of 4,800 meters of fence for administrative and school buildings.
