Benin to participate in AIDS summit in Abuja

Cotonou- Benin (PANA) -- Benin will participate in the Special OAU Summit on HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmissible diseases scheduled 25-27 April in Abuja, Nigeria, official sources announced in Cotonou.
The summit is intended to draw African leaders' attention to the threats the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS poses on the continent's development.
They are expected to adopt a common position on the efforts of poor countries regarding the commercialisation of generic drugs against the pandemic.
President Mathieu Kerekou would lead the Benin delegation comprising specialists from the health ministry and the National Programme for AIDS eradication and NGOs.
The latest statistics made public in Benin showed that 70,000 Beninese, mainly youths and women, were HIV-positive while 50 persons are infected daily.
