Benin launches road safety campaign

Cotonou- Benin (PANA) -- The National Road Safety Centre (CNSR), in cooperation with the NGO "Espace Secours," has launched a road safety campaign to prevent accidents during the end-of-year festive season.
The campaign, to run from 2 November 2001 to 2 February 2002, is aimed at sensitising road users in urban and rural areas on various aspects of the Highway Code.
According to "Espace Secours" chairman Frank Coffi Akpahounka, the period chosen for the campaign is the one most prone road accidents.
Meanwhile, CNSR director Flavien Balogoun said Benin recorded 1,240 road accidents in 2000, with 406 deaths and 1,414 injured.
